Silent Running

Updated: Apr 14, 2019

The Film Society showed the 1972 science fiction film Silent Running, starring Bruce Dern, Mark Persons, and Cheryl Sparks. It takes place in Outer Space sometime in the future and is rated G, although if released nowadays it would have been rated PG for blood and adult language.

Freeman Lowell, a crewman aboard a spaceship carrying forests in domes, is caring for the plant life inside to ensure its preservation as there are no more forests left on Earth. After an order to destroy the domes, he leads a revolt and flees deeper into outer space. He programs the robots aboard the ship to help him care for the plant life. However, he soon learns caring for the forests would be more difficult than he thought. Will he be able to keep the forests alive?

One thing to admire about this movie is the message it delivers about protecting the environment, which is done in a way that will make people relate to why it is important. Another thing to like about this film is the acting, which was very believable, even the actors inside the robots gave good performances. However, some parts of this film are a bit slow and that may deter some people from watching it.

Despite its slow-moving pace, I really enjoyed this film and I would recommend it to those who like science fiction or the importance of protecting the environment.

I would give this movie a 7/10 which is my rating for a good film.
