Deadpool & Wolverine

They are back! This month, I saw the superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine, released on July 26, 2024. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Emma Corrin, it is rated R. Directed by Shawn Levy, it takes place across some Marvel multiverses.

Deadpool is in the middle of having an existential crisis, when he gets pulled into an adventure with Wolverine. Wolverine is not happy to be working with Deadpool and they quarrel often. They need to save Deadpool’s universe, traveling through a void-like place. Can these two incredibly different anti-heroes learn to get along and save the day?

I was a big fan of the first two Deadpool movies. As such, it was a shame that it took this long for a third one to be made, due to Disney buying the rights to this R rated franchise. I was wondering if this movie would hold up as well as the first two, given it is connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It thankfully had the spirit intact. Teaming Deadpool up with Wolverine was amazing. Despite the two interacting in the comics, they never had in movie form. Ryan Reynold’s goofy performance as Deadpool mashes perfectly against Hugh Jackman’s serious performance as Wolverine. I did enjoy all the actors in the movie, but these two stick out the most and keep you entertained in a non-stop ride.

The story does its job. The movie is a tribute to both the Deadpool and X-Men movies, showing that what 20th Century Fox did was not forgotten even with the ever-expanding MCU. They also manage to tribute Fox’s other Marvel superhero movies too. The point is that there is still life in these stories despite them ending on screen. Deadpool and Wolverine also manage to both be likable despite being complete jerks. Friendship is a major aspect, as Deadpool savors it in his universe, while Wolverine has something involved with that revealed later. The importance of social bonds is made clear while still fitting in the action and comedy.

Speaking of which, the action and comedy blend together nicely. They really go overboard on Deadpool’s extreme humor. The number of dirty jokes he makes goes beyond the amount in his preceding 2 films. The fight scenes can be so overly violent and gory that they become funny. Even excluding comedy, the action is awesome to witness. While this is a given, being a movie about Deadpool and Wolverine, the fights are fun to watch. You just keep wanting to see what comes next.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie. While I am more of a fan of the previous Deadpool movies as I felt this movie was more a story with Deadpool in it, whereas those felt like Deadpool stories, and his friends having little screen time with some just disappearing, I do recommend this movie. I feel that the lewd humor and violent fights mean it will not be for everyone, but for people who love these two beloved superheroes, finally seeing their team up means a lot.

The movie expressed the importance of social bonds and how someone could be your friend even when you do not see it. This is important to take note of as social interaction is needed for people to live healthy lives. Without it, we feel less fulfilled. Therefore, you should give someone a chance. It is good for them, as well as good for you.
