The end has finally come! With the release of Marvel’s new movie, Avengers: Endgame, 11 years and 22 films have finally culminated and come together. Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo, this movie takes place in multiple locations and is rated PG-13. Keep in mind that it won’t make sense unless you’ve seen the previous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s time to talk about this film now without revealing any spoilers.
With Thanos having succeeded in his plan to kill off half the universe, things are in chaos everywhere. Our heroes are now in short number and are desperate for a solution to reverse what he did. They may have found a way to undo Thanos’s actions, but they have only one chance to get it right, or things are bad forever. They must give it all they’ve got if they want to bring balance to the universe once again. Will they manage to succeed and restore everything back to normal or will they fail again? And can they all survive?
After the shocking ending of Avengers: Infinity War, people were really looking forward to this movie for an entire year. When I saw that movie, I was so impressed by it that I thought Marvel could never top it, not even with this movie. Now, I see that I was completely wrong. This movie not only concludes the over-arcing storyline in all the MCU movies, but also does it in a very well done and satisfying way. This is just such a big movie from beginning to end, as well as the most dark, emotional, and intense movie from the studio, as the clever plot revolves around all our heroes trying to undo the murder of trillions across the universe. This helps the film draw the viewer in and keeps them in anticipation for what will happen next. Now, let’s talk about some of the aspects of the film itself.
The actors give their all with the performances and they don’t disappoint, one can tell they love their characters. We see them as people who have lost a tremendous amount and are desperately looking for a way to save who’s left & search for solutions to bring the others back. It shows how they’re all feeling after failing to stop Thanos and all that he killed. This gives their characters more depth and emotion than we’ve seen before in other MCU films. There is even more opportunity to improve themselves, like how Hawkeye does more than just shoot arrows. And while the characters are proceeding with their plan to fix everything, they have several encounters that will be satisfying for fans. I’m going to describe the characters in greater detail now.
All the original six Avengers are still alive. Iron Man, stuck with an impossible choice of what to do; Captain America, always looking on the bright side but still aware that their situation is almost hopeless; Hulk, trying to find the blend between being strong and being a genius; Thor, struck over with guilt and bitterness over his failure of stopping Thanos the first time; Black Widow, giving all her energy to save everyone; and Hawkeye, who as I mentioned above, is more than just an archer, he’s a great fighter who is going down a dangerous path so he has to find the right way back. And the other heroes are well portrayed too. Rocket Racoon and Nebula are angry and willing to find a way to avenge those they cared about who were lost. War Machine, trained for combat, is also trying with all his will to bring back those who were killed. Ant-Man is using what he knows to help, having been stuck in a certain situation all this time. Unfortunately, Captain Marvel isn’t in the film as much as was anticipated, which is a shame because she’s a fantastic character from her own movie released last month, and she could’ve done some seriously awesome fighting. On top of that, Okoye doesn’t appear in the film much, despite being on the movie poster with all the other heroes I’ve mentioned and Thanos. All these characters still give off a strong performance to the audience. After all, this is a movie mostly about story and character, not action. That doesn’t mean there isn’t amazing action though.
The action in this movie is epic, with one battle scene that will surely not be forgotten anytime soon. It feels like a battle from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. With not as much action as one would expect from this movie, the creators really work hard with the time devoted to those sequences, including how the special effects and CGI blend with the live action. They continue with Thanos’s lifelike appearance from Avengers: Infinity War, as well as convincing effects for other characters such as the Hulk and Rocket Racoon. All of this works to make this movie one for the ages. I have to give my final thoughts now.
This is not the movie you would expect going into it. The story goes in a different direction than you would think and keeps revealing surprises along the way. Being the longest movie in the history of superhero movies, the runtime is contained with things constantly happening that never once feel like filler. And the fact that it’s a movie about trying to undo a horrible thing that happened and left the universe in ruins really makes viewers want to see what happens. One criticism I would have to make is that there are a few occasions that are a bit ridiculous that undermine the dark and serious tone. But other than that, it is such an impressively made movie from beginning to end. It is the best movie from Marvel ever in my opinion and a movie that ranks towards the very top of my favorite movies. I recommend it to all Marvel fans. Now go see it. . . “whatever it takes”.
